Biological, socio-economic, and administrative opportunities and challenges to moving aquaculture offshore for small French oyster-farming companies ArchiMer
Barillé, Laurent; Bris, Anthony Le; Goulletquer, Philippe; Thomas, Yoann; Glize, Philippe; Kane, Frank; Falconer, Lynne; Guillotreau, Patrice; Trouillet, Brice; Palmer, Stéphanie; Gernez, Pierre.
Oyster production has historically taken place in intertidal zones, and shellfish farms already occupy large extents of the French intertidal space. The expansion of French shellfish aquaculture within intertidal areas is therefore spatially limited, and moving production to the subtidal offshore environment is considered to be a possible solution to this problem. Finding new sites along the French Atlantic coast was studied here from the perspective of small oyster companies run by young farmers, who are interested in offshore bivalve aquaculture expansion compatible with their investment capacity. In assessing the feasibility of such offshore production, we considered three main issues: (1) bivalve growth potential and (2) technical feasibility and...

Elevage intensif de la palourde japonaise Ruditapes philippinarum dans les marais atlantiques: faisabilité biologique ArchiMer
Baud, Jean-pierre; Glize, Philippe; Haure, Joel; Garnier, Jacqueline.

This paper summarizes knowledge about relations between husbandry practices and oyster spat mortalities since 2008 in France. These relations are strictly analyzed from a panel of experiments set on the shore (in outdoor experiments) by Ifremer teams and technical institutes all over French coasts. Results show some practices are able to reduce spat mortality with some influencing factors relevant of spat quality (sanitary status, natural or genetic selection) or husbandry practices. Spat “free” of virus is able to survive up to 90% when it is isolated and confined in ponds or nursery, during an epidemic crisis. When outbreaks occurred in oyster beds, natural or nursery spat died in almost same proportions. In 2010, some studies conducted in Mediterranean...

Remote Sensing-Driven Pacific Oyster (Crassostrea gigas) Growth Modeling to Inform Offshore Aquaculture Site Selection ArchiMer
Palmer, Stephanie C. J.; Gernez, Pierre M.; Thomas, Yoann; Simis, Stefan; Miller, Peter I.; Glize, Philippe; Barillé, Laurent.
Aquaculture increasingly contributes to global seafood production, requiring new farm sites for continued growth. In France, oyster cultivation has conventionally taken place in the intertidal zone, where there is little or no further room for expansion. Despite interest in moving production further offshore, more information is needed regarding the biological potential for offshore oyster growth, including its spatial and temporal variability. This study shows the use of remotely-sensed chlorophyll-a and total suspended matter concentrations retrieved from the Medium Resolution Imaging Spectrometer (MERIS), and sea surface temperature from the Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR), all validated using in situ matchup measurements, as input to...

Response to selection for increasing resistance to the spring mortality outbreaks in Mytilus edulis occurring in France since 2014 ArchiMer
Degremont, Lionel; Maurouard, Elise; Rabiller, Manuella; Glize, Philippe.
Massive spring mortality outbreaks have been reported in Mytilus spp. in France since 2014. The main areas affected are the Pertuis Charentais Sounds and the coast of the Pays de la Loire, which cultivate mainly M. edulis, and the putative causal agents remain unknown. We report the results of the first generation of mass selection focused on survival and resistance to the spring mortality in M. edulis. Two stocks of mussels were sampled in the Pertuis Charentais Sounds in 2014; one of these went through a spring mortality outbreak and the survivors were used to produce the selected stock, while the second stock was M. edulis considered to be naïve against the putative causal agents of the mortality outbreak and was used to produce the control stock. A...

Validation in commercial conditions of the response to selection of the European flat oyster Ostrea edulis for resistance to Bonamia ostreae ArchiMer
Bedier, Edouard; Langlade, Aime; Angeri, Stéphane; Brizard, Raphael; Nerlovic, V.; Glize, Philippe; Haffray, Philippe.
Since the outbreaks of the parasitosis with Marteilia refringens and Bonamia ostreae in the last 60's, the French production of the European flat oyster dropped from 20000 mT to less than 1500 mT currently, leaving the French shellfish farming in situation of virtually monoculture of the Pacific cupped oyster Crassostrea gigas. To sustain this traditional culture, Ifremer has developed, at the experimental level, a genetic selection for a better tolerance to Bonamia ostreae which led to an improvement of survivals. The transfer of these results to the business scale requires the control of the reproduction in hatchery and the adaptation of the cycle of production to the constraints of seedlings in deep water as practised in Brittany (France). That's why a...
